Ninety-nine percent of children ages six through 12 have heard of McGruff the crime dog. But did you know that McGruff and his nephew, Scruff, have a band? McGruff and Scruff and the Crime Dogs ten-song CD and cassette teaches children about safety and crime prevention in an upbeat, non-threatening manner through music. The songs are being played on children's radio stations across the country.
"We've given out the usual McGruff products in the past, but the audio cassette is something a little different," says Sheriff Ron McNesby of the Escambia County, Florida, Sheriff's Office. "This officially licensed product of the National Crime Prevention Council makes a great 'leave behind" for our officers when they visit the schools."
Messages on the tape cover a variety of issues like bicycle safety and the importance of wearing a helmet in the Bicycle Song; how to deal with peer pressure in Cool It, Talk It Out, Then Walk Away; what to do if a stranger comes to your door in Livin' It Safe at Home; and a variety of other issues in Be Smart, Be Safe. The other six songs, Working Together to Stop the Violence, A Fun Way to Family Safety, We've Got to Make a Better World, Crime Bitters , Phone Card Piece of Mind , and Our Nation's Pride are equally informative and useful in teaching children and even their parents these important messages.
The tape is also a useful tool for McGruff visits. McGruff can hand out the CD's and tapes to the children with an imprinted logo that says, "Compliments of (Your) Sheriff's Office." The good will created goes home with the children in the form of a CD or cassette that can be played and shared with their siblings and parents. The CD's and cassettes are reasonably priced at $1.95 to $8.95 depending on the quantity ordered.
